What motivates you?

We all need drive to motivate us to do anything. So, what motivates you? Assuming that you are most likely an SLP or in a related field, you like to help people. With that being said lets talk about patient centered care for you.

What are you responsibilities at work?
What are your responsibilities at home?

What do you do for fun?

I’m sure its a lot and it is surrounded by communication opportunities and the need for many cognitive skills to make your day happen.

Pretend that you’re the patient and you have sustained a neuro event and you need to improve your problem solving and STM memory at the outpatient level.

Now take your responsibilities and interests and apply this to your treatment plan.

What did you come up with?

In the patient centered format you will use those personalized responses and in discussion with your patient, family, and/or caregiver, you can come up with something achievable and personalized.

Here’s my go at it…

Problem Solving and STM:

I love to travel whenever I can with my kids so I imagine a therapy session focusing on a future trip with my family. This would include using internal and external memory aids when looking for a place to stay, transportation, and food. Also, anticipating possible problems with a discussion and responding to possible problems with scenarios given.

Levels of complexity can be modified and assistance level too. The content stays the same!

I hope you got a glimpse of using a few questions to tap into patient centered care.
